Strategic Recommendations: Preparing for the 2026 Charity SORP

Published:1 July 2025
With the Charity SORP 2026 just around the corner, charities must begin preparing now—not just for compliance, but to turn new requirements into a strategic advantage.
“Charities that treat SORP 2026 as a storytelling opportunity—not a reporting burden—will thrive,” says Paul Foden, CEO of Aedon.Accounting.
Here are six key recommendations to set you up for success:
1. Audit Your Data Systems
Can you track volunteer headcount, hours, and roles? If not, begin implementing systems—Aedon.Charities is designed to help you get this right, from spreadsheets to full Volunteer Management Systems (VMS).
2. Break Silos
Finance, HR, fundraising, and operations all have a role in reporting under the new SORP. Establish a cross-functional working group now.
3. Choose Your Framework
Decide which levels of reporting (Inputs, Outputs, Indicative Value, Outcomes) are appropriate for your charity. Not all four are required—but each adds clarity.
4. Develop Your Methodology
Be transparent about how you assign value to volunteer hours. Whether you use a flat National Living Wage or a tiered role-based structure, consistency and disclosure are key.
5. Start Storytelling Early
Begin collecting testimonials, quotes, and case studies from beneficiaries and volunteers alike. These are gold dust for narrative impact.
6. Educate Your Trustees
Boards must understand and approve the enhanced disclosures. Build awareness now so they can support rather than question the process later.
